CRICUT EXPLORE VS. SILHOUETTE CAMEO

Hey Everyone! Well the day has come that I finally got my Cricut Explore. As many of us have seen, many bloggers were given an Explore at the Cricut Summit event. Since then they have been posting some amazing things about this machine and all it could do. However I was wondering if these opinions were coming from a blogger who was truly impressed or one who got a free machine. So one of the first things I wanted to do with my Explore was a comparison cut with my Silhouette Cameo. Both of the machines had brand new blades and never before used mats. The images came from the same source and all I did was import the items into each of the software per the instructions of the particular software. I used 65lb weight paper. Yes, I have already got feedback on using the same color of paper for the next test cuts since I have been told different color dyes can change the cut. Also I wanted to test these at the settings that the machine software recommends, so that would be at blade depth 5 for the cameo and the dial-in between light/heavy card stock for the explore. I realize that we can slow down the speed of the Cameo and that could change the results that we get, however, I wanted to test the "out of the box" results that they have set up for us.  However I feel this setup was a fair match.  Here is the video:

1) The Silhouette cut much faster, actually double the speed as the Explore.
2) The cuts on the Explore were much cleaner. You can clearly see this on the triangle cuts
3) The Explore was quiet.....SO SO SO quiet. I was shocked by how quiet this thing is.
4) Overall pretty neck and neck competition. Some of the cuts you could not tell a difference.

What are your thoughts??

So just to clarify things I am still in LOVE with my Cameo!! At this time the software is way better than design space software. My reaction in this video is more due to the fact that Cricut has designed a machine that can finally compete with the Silhouette Cameo!

  1. I just watched your video and the comparisons are wonderful. I do have the Cameo and still haven't purchased an Explore, but after seeing your video, I will be buying one soon. Thank you!

  2. Any chance you could make the SVG files available? Perhaps some Cameo folks would like to try optimizing the pressure & speed settings to try matching the Explore's quality on the small sizes.

  3. I just don't trust Provo craft ,and if you used one of the blades from China on the Cameo you wouldn't believe the difference with the Cameo.Great Video

    1. Which blades do you use? This is something to look into!! I would love to have a sharper blade. How do you install them? Do you have to get a special holder?

  7. Very interesting.....LOVE MY CRICUT PRODUCTS...but REALLY LOVE the ability of printing/cutting with my Silhouette.....the Explore should have this option in 6-12 months. I'll be very interested in the Explore if/when it has that capability.

  8. Thank you for taking the time to create such an informative video. I am a Cricut die-hard, but did purchase the Cameo about a year and a half ago. Although, it is still new in it's box. Off to Craigslist it goes, I am sticking with Cricut!

  9. I hope you do another video on the software. I am still using the Expression but am ready to upgrade. The thing that interested me most was the accuracy. I make cards and so cut at smaller sizes. Lettering and phrases at small sizes has been frustrating. I am glad to see Explore may have solved this problem. Because of the number of cartridges I have invested in over the years I am leaning toward the Explore over the Cameo but I am intimidated by the online designing of them both. Trying to teach an old dog some new tricks. How difficult is the software to use? Waiting for your next video. Thanks.

  11. What website address do you use to purchase your svg cuts from? What were the cuts you purchased? What do you need to do to have them work on the explore after you purchase them? I do not own a cameo and have never worked with svg cuts before. Thanks for any help.
